My Background & Qualifications

'No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge'
Kahlil Gibran

I have been interested in the healing arts for many years now and found myself drawn to counselling training after my own experience in therapy which I found to be life changing. I will always be grateful to my first therapist who gave me the gift of a compassionate space in which to reflect on myself and who helped me to open many new doors in my life, including training to become a psychological therapist. I completed my foundation and diploma trainings 15 years ago now and continue to develop my skills, particularly in the field of trauma while also dabbling in other healing modalities such as family constellations and shamanism. Along with my interest in psychology, I have also explored philosophy, meditation and spirituality which have all contributed to my own self development. I have had a meditation practice for 10 years or more and formalised my understanding of mindfulness by participating in a teacher training two years ago. Over the last 10 years or so, my beloved dogs have helped me gain an insight into the significant part that nature can play in healing, so I have also been keenly exploring ecotherapy and the amazing benefits it offers to our wellbeing. Below I have outlined the trainings and qualifications I have gained since embarking on this healing path.

I have an Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Counselling from West Kent College where I studied Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis models of counselling. Prior to this I gained a Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Regents College, London. This training covered the four main counselling approaches: Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Existential and Cognitive-Behavioural. Since my Diploma I have completed the Karuna Institute's Foundation Certificate in Core Process Psychotherapy, a mindfulness approach to therapy and a Post-Qualifying Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I am a BACP accredited counsellor, committed to continuing professional and personal development. I am also an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) Practitioner, accredited by the EMDR Association UK & Ireland. I am trained to intermediate level in Somatic Experiencing, a psychosomatic approach to healing trauma developed by Peter Levine. I have participated in a Mindfulness Teacher Training with The Centre for Mindfulness Research & Practice, Bangor University and I have a Certificate in Clinical Supervision.

My Experience

I have worked as a counsellor in a number of settings, including primary care within the NHS, Kent Police Welfare & Counselling Service, an addiction agency and a bereavement agency. I established my private practice over 10 years ago. I have worked with a broad range of clients and issues on both a long and short-term basis, and have specific training and experience in trauma, addiction and bereavement. I am a recognised therapist by BUPA and other major health insurers. I also have provided counselling and EMDR trauma therapy under the Benenden Healthcare scheme for some time now. I have taught on counselling courses run by Kent Adult Education.

As a BACP accredited counsellor, I am bound by its ethical framework for good practice in counselling and psychotherapy, and subject to the professional conduct procedure therein.
